Flat Roof Decks

roof textFlat rooftops offer great opportunities for conversion into attractive entertaining or relaxing areas... and with HandyDeck pavers it's a process that's both quick and painless to achieve.

Not only are they easy to transport up stairs or elevators, but you don't need to install any permanent structural supports or bearers which is often the major impediment to creating a deck on your rooftop. So you just snap the tiles into place over the existing rooftop.

All of our interlocking decking tiles have multiple "feet" on the plastic base to distribute any load evenly over the surface below and alleviate any concerns about potential damage to typical roofing membranes.

But if you or the building owner still have some concerns, then we suggest laying down an EPDM sheet under the tiles as an extra precaution. You can buy EPDM in different widths with lengths up to 50' wide from specialist suppliers such Best Materials or Resource Conservation Technology who can also custom fabricate a single sheet to avoid seams. They can also supply a complete system that includes all required adhesives, sealants etc.

Installing HandyDeck pavers on a roof deck is extremely easy. Just start by placing a tile in one corner and then continue to place the other tiles in position by snapping each tile to its neighbor, working in an expanding triangular pattern across the area.

Since all our tiles are available in several different styles and colors, you can create borders, centerpieces, feature areas etc. as you wish to build an attractive and distinctive rooftop deck. And you can also mix and match any of our wood tiles with the EzyTile slate tiles for even more design options, for example creating a central square of slate surrounded by wood.

Generally with a rooftop, you don't need to use the reducer strips which clip on to the outer row of tiles, unless you are planning to install the tiles over a portion of the deck only and will be walking from the normal rooftop surface to the new tile surface. In this case you would probably use the reducer pieces as a transition strip to avoid any danger of tripping on the edge of tiles.

Since the tiles are locked securely to each other, they will not move once they are laid. However as the tiles are not attached to the surface below in any way, if you live in an area prone to hurricanes or tornadoes, you would be advised to lift up the tiles if there was significant danger of a severe hurricane or tornado in your vicinity. Fortunately with HandyDeck tiles, it's quite an easy process to lift up and replace the tiles if necessary.

Of course you should always check any local regulations to ensure that products such as decking tiles are permitted on rooftops, and you may also need to get permission from the building owner or any other organizations concerned with the care and maintenance of your building.
