Are the slate tiles slippery when wet?

All of the tiles in our EzyTile range have gaps between the individual tiles which allows water to drain away quickly and easily underneath the tiles, thus minimising water collecting on the surface of the tile. Nevertheless it is possible to increase as the resistance of our slate or granite tiles by applying a specialixed anti-slip product.

There are two basic types of products available.

1. A surface coating which generally consists of an aqueous emulsion of resins and other products. These products are claimed to increase slip resistance in dry conditions and also in wet conditions but traction may be increased further by adding aggregate materials.  Because these are coatings rather than penetrating type products, they they may increase the glossiness of the surface and would be subject to wear over time. One example of this type of product is is Skid Safe from www.ndclean.com .

2. Micro edging type products which work by dissolving a small amount of silica in the stone product to create thousands of minute, shallow indentation is in the surface which cannot be felt or seen. The basic principle of this type of product is that when a shoe makes contact with a wet tile, water is evacuated turning the indentations into thousands of tiny suction cups which help to stop the shoe from slipping. Products in this category include Slip Tech http://sliptech.com (which is applied only by their specified contractors) or No Skidding www.noskidding.com (which is designed to be simply mopped onto the floor by the homeowner using a lambs wool applicator). It is claimed that these products will generally lasts for at least five years before a further treatment is required.
