Fixed Height Supports

Fixed height paver support pads

When constructing elevated decks with unit pavers over sloping surfaces including rooftop decks and terraces, at the very lowest elevations below approx. 1 ½” (the min. height of Eterno SE0 adjustable height pedestals), fixed height rubber support pads are normally the best solution. These stackable pedestal supports are simply placed under each corner of the pavers. The pads have spacer tabs built in to enable quick and easy installation and ensure all pavers are accurately spaced and aligned.

You can start with a support pad as low as 3/8″ high (giving a finished deck height of just 1 1/8″ with a porcelain paver) and then stack the support pads on top of each other to a maximum height of approx. 1 1/2″ as you continue your installation across a sloping surface.  1/16″ or 1/8″ thick rubber shims can be laid between the paver and the pedestal head to make minor height adjustments and ensure the pavers do not rock.

Once you reach a height of approx. 1 1/2″, you’ll need to switch to adjustable height pedestals if you require additional height for your deck, using either the Eterno SE range with its self leveling heads, or the  lower cost NM ‘Maxi” range with its fixed heads and separate leveling shims.

Fixed height support pads are especially useful for laying pavers as ‘floating’ patio flooring directly over an existing concrete surface where you’re happy for the pavers to follow the existing slope of the substrate. However by stacking pads on top of each other, you can still construct a perfectly horizontal surface, provided you don’t need to raise the pavers by any more than 1 1/2″ at any point.

The major advantages of a structural paver and rubber pedestal support system compared with laying tiles in thinset for patio flooring, is not only the speed and ease of installation, but the ability to create a perfectly horizontal surface, the elimination of problems with water penetrating grout and lifting and/or cracking tiles and the freedom from pooling of water due to the open gaps remaining between the pavers.

Although we supply fixed height support pads in both plastic and rubber material, we recommend the slightly higher cost solid rubber support pads rather than the plastic pads for ‘floating’ outdoor floors since they offer:

  • superior sound absorption
  • added shock protection
  • greater friction between both the pavers and the substrate

Furthermore, because the increased friction of rubber inhibits pavers from moving, you can often avoid the trouble and expense of constructing a perimeter restraining barrier around the paved area when using rubber pads.

These 6″ diameter stackable pedestals with inbuilt spacer tabs are available exclusively from HandyDeck in either 3/8″ (HD-PAD10) or 5/8″ (HD-PAD16) thickness and can be purchased online here.

1/16″ thick shims (HD-SHIM2) are available to make minor height adjustments.
